Cycling: Gonzalo Serrano (Caja Rural) surprised all the favorites on the second stage of the Tour of Andalusia. On the wavy section, he left the big teams behind in the poisonous final climb. The second division player celebrates his first win of the season. Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) stays yellow.
Another demanding finish
Actually, the second stage of the Ruta del Sol wasn't particularly demanding - if it hadn't been for the last few meters. From Seville to Iznajar it was 198,1 kilometers and three climbs in the third category. The Puerto de Calera, Alto Valle Sierra Sur and Puerto de la Parrilla weren't tough enough to make for crucial peloton selections. The mountains weren't helpful enough for the escapees to succeed either. Although the fugitives were able to secure the interim rankings, it should be for the day's victory for Taco van der Hoorn (Jumbo – Visma), Matthew Holmes (Lotto – Soudal), Alexis Gougeard (AG2R La Mondiale) and Co. are not enough.
Gonzalo Serrano surprises the favorites
In the peloton, Bahrain – McLaren and Astana dominated the race. This allowed the remaining escapees to be collected in Puerto de la Parrilla around 13 kilometers from the finish. Numerous attacks were thwarted over the summit. The Spanish team Movistar set the pace on the descents. Finally, to the destination of Iznájar, we went up 1,2 kilometers with an average gradient of 7,9%. Right at the beginning sat Gonzalo serrano (Caja Rural) the first attack. While the big teams were stalking each other, the Spaniard pulled through - and the favorites came too late. Juan Jose Lobato (XXX) and Dylan teuns (Bahrain – McLaren) crossed the finish line two seconds behind the winner. Leader finished sixth, four seconds behind Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) the stage.
