Route of the Sol #4: Jack Haig rewards himself with the stage win

22. February 2020 by Michael Behringer

Haig Ruta del Sol

Cycling: Jack Haig (Mitchelton – Scott) has won the fourth stage of the Ruta del Sol. The Australian won in the triple sprint ahead of Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) and Mikel Landa (Bahrain – McLaren).

Haig Fuglsang Ruta del Sol

Haig drives aggressively and successfully

The pros had to cover 125,0 kilometers today on the Ruta del Sol from Villanueva Mesia to Granada. On the way, the last three climbs of the tour awaited them. However, only the final Alto del Purche should be really significant, which with its length of 9,0 kilometers and an average gradient of 7,5 percent was only a treat for real climbers. Jack Haig (Mitchelton – Scott) already tried to distance himself from his fellow campaigners there. However, he couldn't get rid of all his companions, so he had to rely on his sprint strength on the last meters before the finish line - with success.

Fuglsang shows no weaknesses

Up to the Alto del Purche, the spectators got to see the expected clash of the favorites. At the same time demonstrated Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) his dominance. After the preparatory work done by his teammates, the overall leader simply pushed the pace again and pulled away from everyone. Only late and with a lot of effort Mikel Landa (Bahrain-McLaren), Jack Haig (Mitchelton-Scott), Ion Izaguirre (Astana) and Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) reconnect. Shortly before the summit, the latter two were no longer able to follow Jack Haig's pace, and the way was clear for the trio.
