Cycling: Yesterday the Germany Tour was canceled, today the German Championship. The event in Stuttgart is to be postponed to next year.
Corona virus prevents German championship
It was to be expected. Since no major events are allowed to take place in Germany until the end of August, the Germany tour cancelled . Now the German championship follows. Actually, the fight for the national jersey in Stuttgart should have traditionally been held at the end of June and thus before the Tour de France. But the too tight schedule after the restart - probably in September - makes it impossible to postpone the DM. It is now planned that the German championship in Stuttgart will be postponed to next year.
BDR President Rudolf Scharping:
"Postponing the German road championship in the current situation is the right step. Athletes, organizers and the Federation of German Cyclists now have clarity. The health of everyone involved has absolute priority and there is currently no improvement in the situation in sight.”
Cycling suffers particularly from Corona
At the moment almost everyone in the world has to live in a state of emergency. The corona virus does not stop at sports either. Cycling, which is already suffering from financial problems, is particularly hard hit. Organizers and teams find it difficult to find new sponsors. That was the case before the pandemic. Now no races can be held for months and the teams and sponsors suffer from low income. Even if individual races are allowed to take place again from August, it is of course not possible to make up for all canceled races within such a short period of time. As a result, a few races fall by the wayside – and probably one or the other team as well.
