Best Cycling Movies #5: Breaking Away

5 April 2020 by Michael Behringer

Cycling Movies

Cycling films: fun driving! The film Breaking Away conveys this feeling. Because he not only presents us with an enthusiastic cyclist, but also with a good portion of humour.

Here you can see how to stream the film on the internet.

Breaking Away: Dave loves Italy

Italy is a cycling nation. Dave, who lives with his family in Indiana and is an absolutely enthusiastic racing cyclist, thinks the same thing. When a team from Italy takes part in a race in his area, his euphoria knows no bounds. But this is abruptly slowed down when he recognizes the arrogance of the drivers. He promptly decides to set up his own cycling team.

From Italian to Francophilia

When Dave competes in the first varsity races, everyone sees his outstanding talent. In this way, he manages to cover some of the distances alone, for which most competing teams need alternating drivers. But Dave is slowed down by an injury. So his friends and teammates Moocher, Cyril and Mike step in for him - but the lead melts away. We don't want to spoiler here as to whether he can still finish the race victoriously. One thing, however, can be revealed: since he finally meets a French student, his Italo- to Francophilia changes.

The encyclopedia of international film:
"A funny and exciting story about young people's thoughts and feelings, which is designed a little too harmonizing and equates sport victory with the solution of all problems, but convinces with atmosphere and actors."
