Hugo Koblet – Pedaleur de Charme: Rise & Fall
In 2010, Daniel Von Aarburg made his documentary Hugo Koblet – Pedaleur de Charme presented to the world public. 60 years earlier, that main character was the first foreigner to win the Giro d'Italia. Just one year later he also triumphed in the Tour de France. Together with Ferdy Kübler, Hugo Koblet managed to trigger a huge cycling euphoria in little Switzerland. The "James Dean of Cycling" impressed the cycling world with his elegant riding style and the women's world was at his feet because of his beauty and sophistication. But things went downhill for himself.
Marriage, end of career, death
After winning the Tour de France in 1951, Hugo Koblet was never able to repeat his peak performance. Although he was still able to celebrate one or two triumphs, there were no major victories. He ruined his health with doping. In 1954 he married the model Sonja Bühl. The two were considered a dream couple and were a staple of the weekly tabloid media. But they separated. When Hugo Koblet also got into financial difficulties after his career, he drove his sports car into a tree. Suicide or Accident? To date, this question has not been answered.
