Tour de France: UCI postpones start to August 29th

15 April 2020 by Michael Behringer

Tour de France

Cycling: As some media reports, the Tour de France 2020 is to be postponed to autumn. On Easter Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced in a television speech that major events would not be allowed to take place before mid-July.

Tour de France 2020: from August 29 to September 20?

The organizers of the Tour de France refused to cancel the world's biggest cycling event. However, it has been clear for a few days: The Tour of France cannot start in Nice on June 27th as planned due to the corona virus. Since then, a new date has been sought, which does not seem so easy due to the uncertainty and the large number of catch-up dates. However, some international media are now reporting that a provisional new spot has been found in the racing calendar. The Grand Boucle is to be held from August 29th to September 20th, 2020. The problem: The last stage in Paris would then collide with the first day of the UCI Road World Championships in Switzerland.

No major events in France before mid-July

Emmanuel Macron has more or less officially made it clear that the 2020 tour cannot start in Nice on June 27th as planned. The French President announced on Easter Monday that major events in France will not be allowed before mid-July. Since hardly anyone can imagine a Tour of France without spectators on the sidelines, postponing the tour is the only option. From August - should the Corona situation have eased significantly by then - it will be interesting to see how the UCI, the world cycling association, redesigns the racing calendar.
