Test: With the BH G8 Disc 7.0, the Basque premium manufacturer presented the latest model of its constantly evolving G-Aero concept. With the new G8, BH Bikes has combined the advantages of an aero bike with the riding characteristics of a classic bike, thereby designing an all-rounder for lots of riding fun and performance. We tested the Spanish aero all-rounder for you.
The new G8 Disc from BH Bikes is said to combine the advantages of an aero bike with the riding characteristics of a classic racing bike, thus offering a swift and well-balanced all-rounder. To make this possible, the development process focused exclusively on disc brakes in order to optimize every detail as best as possible. In addition, ACR technology ensures complete integration of cables and trains in order to combine aerodynamic advantages and a clean look. We have tested for you how this concept works in practice.
BH G8 Disc 7.0 – The frame
The frame of the BH G8 Disc not only catches the eye immediately because of its color scheme, but also scores with a high-quality and clean overall impression. Added to this is the slooping geometry, which gives the bike its own touch. Because the slightly higher head tube and a short rear end, in combination with the aerodynamic tube shapes, ensure an unmistakable look. In order to ensure the best performance at all times, BH Bikes uses the HCIM (Hollow Core Internal Molding) process, which allows the material thickness to be better controlled in preparation for the production process, in order to produce a particularly light frame that is still stiff and stable. Including the integrated seat dome, the BH G8 Disc has an attractive frame weight of just 920 grams.
But the developers at BH Bikes didn't just think about weight, the aerodynamic details were also taken into account and tested in the wind tunnel. In order to obtain an innovative and aerodynamic cross section as well as an optimal geometry of the rear frame triangle, computer-aided and aerodynamic analyzes were carried out on the computer. The BH Bikes R&D team identified the cross-sections that produced the best results so that they could reach their full potential in the G8 Disc frame. The comb design of the tube shapes optimizes the flow dynamics of the frame. This has been improved again compared to the previous model G7, making the BH G8 Disc faster. If we are already talking about aerodynamics, one must also mention the ACR technology, which integrates all trains and cables and allows them to disappear into the frame.
The rear end of the G8 Disc has also been further optimized in the area around the flat-mount brake mount in order to ideally distribute the additional braking forces of the disc brake. The tire passage of the rear triangle has also been increased to accommodate tires up to 28mm wide. The shape and structure of the chainstays and seat stays have also been made finer and asymmetrical, which should have a particularly positive effect on power transmission and riding comfort.
The overall aerodynamic package is completed by the levers integrated in the 12mm through axles, which enable the axles to be removed without tools, the DI2 battery integrated in the seat post and the aerodynamically designed clamp of the seat post.
BH G8 Disc 7.0 – The equipment
As befits a high-quality bike, the right equipment should not be missing. With the BH G8 Disc 7.0, this starts with the electric Shimano Ultegra Di2 groupset, which ensures smooth shifting and precision. Combined with the high-quality FSA SLK carbon crank and the FSA SLK handlebar, the bike becomes a real eye-catcher. The aero all-rounder is rounded off by the 50mm high Evo Carbon rims, which offer a good mix of aero wheels and lightweight. Even though we haven't made friends with the Hutchinson Epsilon tire yet, it's positive to note that it even comes in a width of 28mm and should offer a little more grip and comfort than the narrower version.
BH G8 Disc – Fast aero all-rounder ?!
The sloped geometry of the BH G8 Disc is already clearly noticeable on the first meters. The high head tube provides a certain plus in comfort, while the compact rear end has an appealing effect on handling and power transmission. This means that bumps are almost completely hidden and you have the feeling that you are not wasting any power when accelerating and that you can really accelerate. Coupled with the aerodynamic properties and the successful total weight of approx. 7,6 kilos, the BH G8 actually has the potential to become a sporty all-rounder. Because both fast exits and climbing passages are no problem with the BH G8.
The seat tube of the G8 gives you a slightly lower center of gravity than usual, which ensures a lot of stability and safety and offers a pleasant driving experience, especially around corners. Despite its certain (running) calmness, the BH G8 shows itself to be very agile in handling, which allowed us to let it run properly on technical descents. With the good disc brakes you also have enough reserves here and come to a standstill quickly.
The BH G8 Disc 7.0 is also convincing on flat sections, because the aero frame and the 50mm high wheels ensure good rolling characteristics and are really fun even at high speeds.
