Cycling highlights: Sagan becomes world champion for the first time in Richmond

17 May 2020 by Michael Behringer

Sagan World Cup 2015

Cycling highlights: Peter Sagan can now look back on three world championship titles. He won his first in Richmond in 2015. And not in a mass sprint, but with a courageous solo attack.

Sagan doesn't wait for the sprint

The World title by Peter Sagan in 2015 came as no surprise. Almost all experts named the Slovak as one of the favourites. He has won the points classification of the Tour de France several times and of course numerous stages and important one-day races. But HOW Peter Sagan was able to win at the World Championships in Richmond surprised everyone. Instead of waiting for a bunch sprint, he attacked on a small uphill cobblestone section with over three kilometers to go. He could hardly rely on his teammates because his nation was clearly outnumbered by the others. All the more impressive is the fact that the title in Richmond should not remain his only one.

Three in a row: Two more world titles were to follow

Winning a world title while coasting and jubilantly crossing the finish line is particularly enjoyable. But in the two years that followed, he showed us that Peter Sagan can do things differently. Both in Doha 2016 and in mountains 2017 the Slovakian was able to repeat his title win - but this time in a mass sprint. At the age of 27 he was crowned triple world champion.
