Product news / E-Performance: The Shimano Steps e-bike system is now firmly established on the market. Shimano is updating its models for 2021 and is adding new, larger batteries and a compact display control unit to its systems.
New internal and external batteries with up to 630Wh capacity
Shimano is adding some new batteries to its Steps portfolio for the coming season. The new high-performance model BT-E8036 is mounted in the frame and holds a whopping 630Wh. This makes it the largest Shimano battery for intube assembly to date. The smaller model BT-E8035-L has the same dimensions but only holds 504Wh. The downside: According to Shimano, the charging time of the smaller model is only four hours or 2,5 hours for 80%.
With the BT-E8016 there is also a new battery for down tube mounting. This also holds a generous 630Wh, but due to its corresponding dimensions it also needs a new bracket.
According to Shimano, all new batteries have a very long service life in common: After 1.000 full charging cycles, 60% of the original capacity should still be retained.
Compact display with integrated remote
Also completely new in the Shimano e-bike lineup for 2021 is the SC-E5000 display. Although "display" is actually not quite right, because the E5000 is a system display and control unit in one and is reminiscent of Bosch's Purion in terms of function and appearance. Shimano promises good readability even in direct sunlight. The compact solution will certainly be found on many e-bikes in the future. Just as interesting: The SC-E5000 is compatible with all current Steps systems.
