Test: With its relaxed geometry, comfortable chassis and smooth-rolling tires, the KTM Macina Chacana is primarily aimed at touring e-mountain bikers. They should also like it because of the many mounting options and of course because of the Bosch CX motor. In real terrain, however, it's not our first choice.

The wide range of applications for modern e-mountain bikes is probably nowhere as evident as on a beautiful spring or summer day on the river cycle paths of the republic. Far from challenging trails and technical climbs, there are probably more mountain bikes than trekking bikes here now. The reason is simple: the wheels, which are designed for off-road use, are noticeably more comfortable even on bad bike paths, and a modern mid-engine easily compensates for the increased rolling resistance. This area of application should have been the basis for the development of the KTM Macina Chacana. The result is an extremely comfortable, versatile e-mountain bike that is only partially comfortable in "real" terrain.

Comfortable and suitable for touring
You take a seat on the Macina Chacana in a nice, central and pleasantly upright position. The high front ensures that the arms and hands are relieved and you can pedal comfortably. The support for this is provided by a fourth-generation Bosch CX motor. This is often reduced to its power, but it is also one of the most sensitive motors on the market and impresses with a natural driving experience, especially at low support levels. Unfortunately, it draws attention to itself with a relatively high hum even under low load. The KTM is operated via the equally successful Kiox system, whose display is nicely integrated into the stem. The control lever is easy to reach, but cannot get top marks in terms of ergonomics.

The chassis on the Macina Chacana also contributes to this very comfortable overall impression. With 130mm at the front and 125mm at the rear, it doesn't offer too many reserves, but it easily swallows deep potholes or even a curb. The rear end is very sensitive, in keeping with the basic character of the bike, but offers little counter pressure overall. Nice: For the gear components, apart from the cassette (SLX), KTM uses XT 12-speed components from Shimano throughout.
Good equipment with questionable tire choice
The handling and the basic orientation of the KTM E-MTB are clearly designed for a moderate pace - this applies to the uphill as well as the descent. In both cases, technical passages are not the job of a comfortable tourer. However, an easy trail or beaten track can always be mastered with the Macina Chacana. In addition to the geometry, the biggest limiting factor turned out to be the tires installed far away from paved paths: The Schwalbe combination of Racing Ray and Racing Ron is actually more at home on cross-country bikes and, despite the comfortable area of use of the Macina Chacana, does not want to become an e-bike at all. fit MTB. The grip is average front and rear and the puncture protection due to the thin carcass as well. We would have wished for at least a combination with more volume. The bike would benefit enormously from this on off-road excursions.
Thumbs up: For the Macina Chacana, KTM offers a special mudguard set with an integrated light, for which the frame and a side stand already have mounting points.
