Huh, what is that? In 2020, you'll be a bit surprised when you see a current eMTB that doesn't have a battery integrated into the frame. On the Sledge ES from Stevens, the energy storage sits on the down tube in the classic way, but it is really nicely integrated into the design and is hardly visually noticeable. In addition, the design has tangible advantages. Handling is much easier, whether it's swapping it out for a full second battery on tour or simply removing it at home to charge the battery. In addition, the frame construction is simpler, which saves costs and weight.
Rear-heavy seating position
In practice, the Stevens, coated with a chic effect finish, proves to be amazingly lively and agile. The compact frame and low weight allow the bike to accelerate effortlessly out of corners. The built-in E8000 motor harmonises very well with these properties. Dynamics, acceleration, naturalness - these undisputed qualities of the Japanese mid-engine also make the Hamburg bike a lot of fun. Unfortunately, you can also feel that it is not one of the most powerful drives on the market. The Sledge ES reaches its limits, especially when things get really steep.
The drive itself plays a role here, but so does the compact geometry with its short chainstays; Due to the rear-heavy seating position, the front wheel keeps losing contact with the ground. However, as long as it doesn't get too technical, you can climb almost any summit with the Stevens, also thanks to the wide graduated cassette of the Shimano 12-speed gears.
In view of the 160mm or 150mm travel, the potent Fox Performance Elite suspension components and grippy Eddy Current tires from Schwalbe, the Stevens Sledge ES tempts you to expect a downhill machine behind it. The E-MTB also lives up to this expectation if you know how to use it. While many other bikes in this class rely on a long wheelbase and plush chassis and thunder down even difficult trails like on rails, the Sledge ES takes a different approach.

Test: The Canyon Neuron:ON 9.0 takes the place of the well-behaved touring full suspension bike in the Koblenz-based E-MTB lineup, but was able to prove in the test that it is an excellent versatile off-road all-rounder. Lively fun machine on the descent
Its lively character is also evident here, but thanks to the well-harmonized components, it has the necessary dash of smooth running so as not to get nervous too quickly. The chassis can be adjusted very variably at the front and rear to suit different driving styles. Especially at the front, the complex Grip2 damping requires some experience and a handful of test rides until you have found the right setup. So anyone who expects an e-mountain bike of the type “hold the handlebars and go full throttle” will be disappointed. However, those who play with the terrain on the descent and whiz through tight berms under pressure will find a suitable companion here. Only the relatively narrow handlebars caught our eye somewhat negatively in the otherwise well-rounded equipment mix.
