Test: The Trek Rail 7 is a lot of fun with a very high-quality and well-balanced frame. Clever battery integration, great geometry, convincing drive - the Americans really did everything right in this respect. The equipment is also largely convincing, although it somewhat limits the great potential of the frame.

The seating position on the Trek Rail 7 was definitely designed with a sporty driver in mind. The frame is quite long, the front not too high to be able to exert enough pressure on the front wheel. However, the dimensions are nowhere so extreme that even beginners would not find their way around the visually striking E-MTB. The chassis finds a similarly good balance. In terms of its basic character, we would describe it as sporty and taut, but it does not neglect comfort in moderate terrain.

Round overall performance off-road
With 150mm or 160mm of spring travel and sporty handling, the Rail literally blossoms on the trail. Thanks to the low center of gravity and the central position on the bike, you can enjoy a full riding experience that conveys an extremely high level of safety. Together with the great running smoothness, the bike also invites you to explore the limits. The positive driving characteristics are largely retained even at high speeds and a rough driving style, even if the RockShox Yari RC then starts to sweat quite a bit at the front. The relatively simple cushioning is a little overwhelmed with fast hits and tends to harden.

The reasonably priced 4-piston brakes from Shimano perform surprisingly well. The reason for this may also be the large, high-quality brake discs, with which you have no difficulty bringing the rail, which weighs just over 23 kg, to a standstill even on longer descents. Also positive: Even with heavy rumbling, the bike remains quiet and only rattles minimally. For steep terrain, we would only have wished for a dropper post with more lift. As well as the Tranz-X works, in our opinion, 130mm travel in sizes L and XL is not enough for a bike with such great trail potential.
Solid climber with Bosch power
The Trek E-MTB delivers a similarly convincing performance when climbing. This strong uphill performance is of course due to the impressive Bosch CX motor, among other things. The drive of the Swabians brings with it an almost perfect balance between supportive power, sensitivity and naturalness. There are slight deductions for the rather unpleasant background noise with high support performance.
However, the drive alone does not make an E-MTB a good climber. Fortunately, the rail also has the right geometry for this. You don't sit too rear-heavy and from this central position you can comfortably climb many climbs while sitting. The bike reaches its limits when it gets very technical and very steep. An even steeper seat tube angle might be helpful here. However, this is nothing more than the much-cited fly in the ointment and can hardly cloud the otherwise all-round successful impression.
