Alpina Rootage Helmet: Helmet test and competition

August 1, 2020 by the editorial office

Test and sweepstakes: The Alpina Rootage is a tried-and-tested and popular mountain bike helmet that has had its colors revised again for the current model year. Black-Neon-Yellow, Indigo-Cherry-Drop and Seamoss are the three new color concepts of the Rootage, but the most modern materials can also be found on the Rootage. We were able to test the helmet extensively and are very enthusiastic about this head protection with a small drop of bitterness.

When Alpina recently introduced the new colors and we in z Alpina Rootage briefly reported, interest in a test has already increased. The first impression after unpacking was: light and of high quality. The new colors also look fresh and modern, definitely an eye-catcher on the trails!

Alpina Rootage: comfort and safety

Thanks to the use of the most modern materials, the enduro and mountain bike helmet is extremely light and yet stable. Starting with the outer skin: The 3-layer ceramic shell (polycarbonate) creates a stable outer skin. The product developers have come up with something to save weight at the crucial points without sacrificing safety. The use of carbon elements, which are incorporated into the ceramic shell, significantly increases the rigidity and stability.

The edges, an optically sensitive area, are additionally protected by the neon yellow elements on the test helmet. A win-win situation, because the ventilation openings can also be made a little larger in a visually appealing way. Inside the helmet is a shell made of Hi-EPS, a type of foam that gets its stability and protection from microscopically small air chambers. The finer these air chambers are, the more stable the shell becomes without increasing the weight.

In order to adapt the helmet to most head shapes, the circumference of the helmet can be adjusted with the Run-System-Ergo-Flex. The system is particularly smooth-running and can be adjusted almost steplessly. The straps can also be adjusted on the ears using a Y-clip, making room for large eavesdroppers.

Alpina Rootage: impression on the trail

Put it on, adjust it, drive off and it sits. Just turn the Run-System-Ergo-Flex wheel and adjust the helmet to the shape of your head with absolute ease. The adjustment of the Y-clip on the ears fitted immediately and then we could start. Tests were carried out in the forest at high summer temperatures of around 30°C, i.e. the best conditions for evaluating ventilation.

In short: Really good! Because thanks to the huge opening at the front, there is enough air between the head and the helmet, even when driving slowly uphill, which is well distributed and cools through the intelligently designed ventilation channels. In order to prevent insects from being "sucked in", a mosquito net was attached to the large opening at the front. But despite the good ventilation, sweat cannot be avoided, which is why the Alpina Rootage has special antibacterial padding on the inside, which is intended to reduce the formation of bacteria and odors.

There was no fall, so we rely on the EN1078 certification here.

The Alpina Rootage is a helmet that has been established for a long time, now the model has been revised with new colors. During our test, we noticed the large ventilation openings, which more than fulfill their purpose. Even in high summer temperatures, the Rootage feels so comfortable on the head. This probably also has to do with the low weight of 348g measured (size 52-57). A drop of bitterness is the missing protection system against rotational forces (e.g. MIPS), here you could add something in terms of security.
