Cycling: what a race! Jakob Fuglsang won the Tour of Lombardy – and how. The Dane left George Bennett just before the finish line. Remco Evenepoel, on the other hand, fell in a downhill and was hospitalized.
Il Lombardia in midsummer
The "Race of the Falling Leaves" had to be brought forward this year. Instead of October 10th, the 114th Tour of Lombardy was now held in mid-August. This caused some changes. Because instead of the actually cool temperatures in autumn, the drivers had to cope with the heat in midsummer today. Due to the Critérium du Dauphiné taking place at the same time, some well-known professionals were absent. The minor route changes, on the other hand, should be less important, since the known climbs were all retained. 231,0 kilometers had to be covered from Bergamo to Como. As usual, the Colle Gallo, the Colle Brianza, the Madonna del Ghisallo, the Colma de Sormano, the Civiglio and many other climbs should provide excitement on the way. Even though a breakaway group dominated the race, the favorites quickly took over. For their leaders Alexander Vlasov (Astana) and Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck – Quick-Step), the helpers made the race difficult.
Evenepoel falls heavily
There was a moment of shock about 45 kilometers before the finish. Lost in a descent Remco Evenepoel lost control of his bike. He fell off a bridge and lay there for minutes until rescue workers arrived. The rescue was not easy due to the difficult situation. Luckily, the Eurosport commentators got the information pretty quickly that the young Belgian is conscious. However, we do not yet have any more detailed information.
Fuglsang leaves Bennett
The Astana and Trek – Segafredo teams meanwhile determined the sporting part of the Lombardy Tour. With Vincenzo Nibali and Giulio Giccone and last year's winner Build Mollema Tre – Segafredo was represented three times in front. Astana had with Jakob Fuglsang and Alexandr Vlasov two men with me. About 20,0 kilometers before the finish, the Kazakh team made another selection. The two professionals in cyan could only George Bennett (Jumbo – Visma) to follow. But even for the New Zealander it was over at some point. 6,3 kilometers from the finish Jakob Fuglsang his big attack. The Dane left George Bennett standing - and couldn't be caught anymore.
