Kalkhoff 2021: E-bikes with a high payload: Up to 170kg total weight in numerous models

August 18, 2020 by Michael Faiß

Product news / e-bikes: Kalkhoff has a special ace up its sleeve for the 2021 model year - three e-bike models have a total permissible weight of an impressive 170 kg across several equipment variants.

Kalkhoff E-Bikes: The naming concept

At first glance, the model designations from Kalkhoff may seem a bit confusing. However, if you take a quick look at the naming, it becomes clear: the traditional manufacturer has put a lot of thought into this and thus allows the bike to be classified immediately based on its designation.

Within the four model variants Endeavor (trekking), Entice (SUV), Image (urban) and Agattu (city comfort), different platform and equipment levels allow a clear and detailed identification of the built-in equipment. The individual platforms 1, 3, 5 and 7 differ in the degree of their integration, the general equipment and the frame. The different equipment levels within the platforms are then "fine gradations" in the respective component selection.

Kalkhoff 5 Plus: Up to 170kg total weight across different models

From model year 5, the Level 2021 platform will be completely called Level 5 Plus and is optimized for a particularly high payload. All models from Endeavor, Entice and Image (except Season special models) are therefore approved for a permissible total weight of up to 170kg.

Kalkhoff already had individual models with the designation XXL for particularly tall and/or heavy drivers. However, it has been recognized that the market for this is significantly larger and more diverse than is generally assumed: Even riders of average weight can benefit from a high payload on an e-bike. Example of everyday life with a child: trailers, child seats and weekly shopping exceed the permissible payload of many current e-bikes. It was precisely for this reason that Kalkhoff decided to align the entire 5 level for these high loads.

However, the high level of stability does not only apply to the frame and the wheels, for example, but also to the brakes and suspension fork. Powerful 5-piston stoppers on all 4 Plus models ensure plenty of braking power. In addition, there are air suspension forks in all equipment levels, which can be adjusted to different rider weights using air pressure. In this way, one does justice to heavy drivers without a lot of luggage as well as to those who weigh a few kilos less but are traveling with a trailer or similar.

Kalkhoff Entice 5+

In the Kalkhoff portfolio, the Entice is most likely to fulfill the role of the increasingly popular e-bike SUVs. In the 2021 model year, all equipment variants come with full-size 29-inch MTB tires, which also convey a safe driving experience far off the beaten track. All Entice models of the 5+ series are equipped with the powerful Bosch Performance CX motor and 625Wh batteries integrated in the down tube. All models are available with either a diamond or trapezoidal frame and also as wave step-through models.

The Entice5+ top model in the Advance version comes with SLX 12-speed gears and high-quality Maxxis tires. In terms of price, it comes in at just under 4.000 euros. For 200 euros less you get the Move + equipment variant. Here there is "only" a 10-fold Deore circuit and a not quite as powerful lighting system. The Schwalbe tires are designed for better paths.

Kalkhoff Endeavor 5+

The Endeavor is the e-bike all-rounder par excellence at Kalkhoff: Daily commute to the office? No problem! Extended tour at the weekend? Gladly! The generous permissible total weight expands the area of application even further and also makes the Endeavor an excellent family bike with a trailer, child seat and more.

All three equipment variants - Excite, Advance and Move - come with the quiet and harmonious third generation Bosch Performance drive and a long-range 625Wh battery in the down tube. They also all have the Suntour air suspension fork with 63mm travel and powerful 4-piston brakes in common. The main differences between the various equipment levels are in the gears: From Shimano XT 12-speed (Excite) to Deore 12-speed (Advance) to Deore 10-speed (Move). All models are available with diamond and trapezoidal frames and also as wave low step-through bikes and are each available in two colors.

Kalkhoff Image 5+

Time for everyday heroes: The Kalkhoff Image 5+ is designed as a daily companion, especially in the city: hub gears, relaxed geometry and of course a pleasantly high load capacity. Thanks to the Performance Line motor from Bosch and the Powertube 625 battery, you have plenty of reserves when it comes to the drive. Nice: The design is based on the rest of the program and is much more modern and elegant than many of the city e-bike competition.

All equipment levels rely on a low-maintenance hub gear: The Move+ and Advance+ models rely on the proven Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub, the Excite+ top model even uses a stepless Enviolo. The two high-quality equipment variants also combine their gear hub with a virtually maintenance-free Gates carbon belt.
