Product news / e-bikes: With the new Bergamont Paul-E, the manufacturer from the north is targeting the ambitious undertaking of the e-folding bike.
Folding bikes are still a small niche on the colorful bicycle market - but depending on the application they are very practical and for many people irreplaceable. With their handiness - whether in public transport or in the trunk - such wheels can clearly stand out from almost all other wheels on the market.
There are two simple reasons why folding bikes are one of the very few bicycle categories not really caught up in the e-bike boom: On the one hand, the additional weight from the motor and battery significantly limits handiness and portability. On the other hand, the combination of drive integration and folding mechanism poses great challenges for the designers. Bergamont tries to take on these challenges with the Paul-E - and at least on paper the St.Paulians seem to master it.
Bergamont Paul-E folding bike: modern look, intuitive handling
In view of the additional weight of e-bikes compared to classic bikes, the handling and folding mechanism of an e-bike are even more important than they already are. Bergamont's answer to that is Everyday Suitability Concept: Thanks to some clever features, the folding process and handling should be very good despite the weight of 22,5 kg.
This includes, for example, the recessed grip at the transition from the seat tube to the down tube, which makes it easy to carry and lift the bike when it is folded. Furthermore, cables and cables are routed internally in the frame - in such a way that they do not get in the way when folding. The integrated Klick Fix system also holds the Paul-E folded to 90 x 45 x 80 cm firmly together.
Bergamont Paul-E folding bike model variants
The new Bergamont e-folding bike 2021 is launched with two equipment variants. Both rely on the Shimano Steps E5000 drive with the new E5000 remote, 20 inch rims and disc brakes.
The main differences between the two models for 3.699 euros and 2.999 euros are in the battery and gears: While the top model has an extremely large (for a folding bike) 504 Wh battery, the cheaper edition variant “only” has 418 Wh, but this with a folding bike, this should usually be more than sufficient. With the Nexus 5 e-bike gear hub and Gates belt drive, the Bergamont Paul-E EQ Expert also relies on an extremely high-quality and low-maintenance gear train. The Nexus 7 hub gear with a classic chain on the cheaper model is by no means a bad choice either.
