Cycling: Simon Yates scored a double on the fifth stage from Tirreno – Adriatico. The Briton not only won the stage, but also took the overall lead.
Van der Poel appears in the breakaway group
Queen's stage near Tirreno – Adriatico! The 202,0 kilometer section from Norcia to Sassotetto promised the spectators on site and on the screens an eventful race. And the pros should not disappoint them. So placed among other things Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Fenix) in the break of the day. Ultimately, however, the Dutchman became just like his companions – such as the Swiss Matthew Frank (AG2R La Mondiale) collected again before the final climb. Again, the EF team in particular was in the main draw for leaders Michael Woods active.

In the final climb, attacks by Vincenzo Nibali (Trek – Segafredo) and Jakob Fuglsang (Astana). EF reacted calmly and confidently. As Simon yates (Mitchelton – Scott) launched his attack and the battle of the top favorites was on. Nobody could follow the British. Behind them formed a trio consisting of Rafal Mayka (Bora – hansgrohe), Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana) and Geraint Thomas (Ineo). Michael Woods was beaten. With the day's victory, Simon Yates also takes over the blue jersey of the overall leader. Geraint Thomas sprinted in second place ahead of Rafal Majka.
The decision will be made on Monday
There are still three stages to go in the 55th edition of Tirreno – Adriatico. After another mass sprint tomorrow, a hilly section awaits us on Sunday. However, the final decision in the overall standings will not be made until Monday, when the tour ends with an individual time trial in San Benedetto del Tronto.
