Cycling: Alexey Lutsenko has won the sixth stage of the Tour de France. The Kazakh master turned out to be the strongest outlier. The top favorites refrained from attacks.
8 men on the run
Already at 12:00 p.m. the pros started their day at the Tour de France get to work. After the start in Le Teil, 191,0 kilometers had to be covered to the finish on Mont Aigoual. Unlike yesterday, the breakaway group of the day formed quite early. Olympic champion greg van avermaet (CCC) broke away alongside the Kazakh champions alexey lutsenko (Astana), Edvald Boasson Hagen (NTT), Nicholas Roche (Sunweb), Neilson Powless (EF), Jesus Herrada (Cofidis), Daniel Oss (Bora – hansgrohe) and Remi Cavagna (Deceuninck - Quick Step). In the main field, there was initially disagreement. Finally, some teams - mainly French - were not represented at the front, which certainly wanted to be there. But since the breakaway group harmonized well, the composition was finally accepted. After the lead grew to just over six minutes, the team took over Mitchelton - Scott for leader Adam Yates the control.
Bennett underlines ambitions on green
The intermediate sprint went to the escapees. Behind snapped Roger Kluge (Lotto – Soudal) scored the points with a surprising attack. A questionable action, considering that Caleb ewan (Lotto – Soudal) himself is not involved in the intermediate sprints at all and is therefore almost out of the race in the fight for the green. In any case, he wasn't impressed Sam Bennett (Deceuninck - Quick Step). The Irish champion grabbed the points in the sprint ahead of Anfahrer Michael Morkov (Deceuninck - Quick Step). Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) continues to lose ground. Nicholas Roche (Sunweb) got maximum points in the first two climbs. In the peloton, the Ineos team has long since taken over the tracking work and reduced the gap to less than three minutes.
Ineos at a leisurely pace
Arriving at the Col de la Lusette – after all, a 11,7 km long and 7,3 percent steep mountain – forced Remi Cavagna in the breakaway directly the pace. Edvald Boasson Hagen and Daniel Oss couldn't follow. A short time later, too Remi Cavagna self distanced. 4,0 kilometers before the summit alexey lutsenko serious. The Kazakh master also left his other companions and made his way towards the finish as a soloist. The peloton apparently had no interest in collecting the fugitives. Ineos' pace just wasn't fast enough. So could Fabio Arau (UAE) even went on the offensive and quickly gained a lead of around a minute – but then lost it again.
Lutsenko won't let the victory be taken away
alexey lutsenko rode the last 15 kilometers alone and didn't let the victory of the day be taken away from him. Behind fought himself Jesus Herrada second place, although he has already been left behind several times. In the peloton, there were no more attacks worth mentioning because the last few kilometers before the finish line were simply not demanding enough. Only Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) sprinted a second in the final meters. Tadej pogacar (UAE) survived a moment of shock when he had to change his bike, but was able to rejoin the peloton. With that remains Adam Yates (Mitchelton – Scott) in the yellow jersey. Tomorrow there should be a mass sprint.
