Road World Championship: Filippo Ganna dethrones Rohan Dennis in World Championship time trial

September 25, 2020 by Michael Behringer

Ganna Road World Championship Imola Time Trial

Cycling: Filippo Ganna won the World Cup time trial in his home country of Italy. The 24-year-old easily won gold ahead of Belgian Wout van Aert and Swiss Stefan Küng.

World Championship time trial on the motorsport racetrack

57 drivers have signed up for today's men's time trial world championships with start and finish on the motorsport race track in Imola. At 14:30 the Syrian left Ahmad Wais on the track, which is probably only known to the greatest scene connoisseurs and of course had no chance of winning the medals. The fastest pros should go almost 31,7 minutes later on the 90-kilometer course. The two Germans were there Jasha Sutterlin (Sunweb) and Max Walscheid (NTT), who finished the day in 16th and 19th place respectively. The Austrians Felix Ritzinger (WSA KTM Graz) and Matthias Brandle (Israel Start-Up Nation) found themselves in the tableau at places 46 and 27 respectively.

Ganna is in a league of her own

Due to the renewed strong wind and the light rain at times, the men's times were not quite as fast as expected today. Nevertheless, the spectators of course got an exciting fight to see the medals. This decided - much to the delight of the Italian fans on the side of the road - Filippo Gana (Ineos) for himself. The Italian referred the Belgian wout van aert (Jumbo – Visma) and the Swiss Stefan Kung (Groupama – FDJ) by 26 and 29 seconds respectively. The performance of last year's winner and top favorite was somewhat disappointing Rohan Dennis (Ineo). In the end, the Australian's time should only be enough for fifth place. With 39 seconds behind the new world champion, he surprisingly missed his World Cup hat-trick.
