Shimano S-Phyre RC9: Now feel professional performance on your own feet!

September 1, 2020 by Florian Nowak

Product news: Just in time for the Tour de France, the leading component manufacturer Shimano has also expanded its clothing and shoe line with the new Shimano S-Phyre RC9. The high-end racing shoe has already had top-class victories with the Jumbo-Visma team and was able to support Wout van Aert in his World Tour victories (Strade Bianche and Milan-Sanremo). The new S-Phyre shoe should convince with an even better fit and performance-oriented orientation.

Since its introduction in 9, the Shimano S-Phyre RC2017 racing shoe has racked up countless victories in the world's most important cycling races. The new model has also been able to join this success story and is intended for all those who want to become even faster. The new model combines scientifically based design with materials of the highest quality to create a shoe that allows no compromises. The use of function-specific zones, the optimization of power transmission and the unique fit ensure remarkable stability and maximum comfort for the driver.

Nevertheless, the new model does not forget its roots and also has things in common with the previous models. These include reinforced microfiber leather, replaceable heel pads, flat Boa Li2 twist locks and the Dynalast fit. The new construction and the revised design should raise the new Shimano S-Phyre RC9 to an even higher level for first-class competition performance.

The approach followed was that cycling shoes must be optimized for more than just power transmission. Because every shoe needs the right combination of performance, stability and comfort. By studying the pedaling dynamics and foot movement of road cyclists at the highest level, Shimano was able to create function-specific areas in the Shimano S-Phyre RC9, thereby solving a technical conundrum by using layers of reinforced mesh and leather uppers to improve fit, stiffness and stiffness , to maximize flexibility, elasticity and breathability.

In addition to the ultra-stiff and light carbon fiber composite sole with maximum stiffness level 12, power transmission has been optimized through the use of a new heel cap with anti-twist protection for optimal foot positioning. Foot motion and pedal studies from professional drivers were analyzed to determine the forces exerted during explosive acceleration. The result was a redesigned heel counter with a combination of flexible and rigid materials, engineered to absorb the intense torsional forces exerted by explosive acceleration.

Finally, another mystery to be uncovered was the engineering required to create the perfect fit across all size variations (including the large version and women's sizes). A new 360° enclosing upper shoe envelops the foot from the upper material to the outsole with a supporting function and thus offers not only stability but also maximum comfort.

The closure system features two Boa Li2 dials that allow precise adjustment in both directions. In addition, the new top model of the third generation has the so-called Silvadur technology, which uses silver ions to ensure long-lasting freshness and reduces unwanted odors or discolouration, which can shorten the life of the shoe.

The RC902 weighs 235g (size 42) and is available in Blue, Black, White and Red in sizes 38-48 and 41-47 wide version. There is also a special women's version in white and sizes 36-43. The new Shimano S-Phyre RC9 will be available in mid-October for €359,95.

Florian Nowak is a professional cyclist at the EuropeTour level and has competed in many international races. At the German championship in 2017, he was the best non-WorldTour professional in 7th place and was therefore able to recommend himself for the Tour de L'Avenir and the World Championships. But he doesn't just feel comfortable on the racing bike, he's also always drawn to off-road terrain. In addition to sport, he works on his second mainstay and has completed his business administration studies at the LMU Munich.
