Giro d'Italia #20: Stage win for Geoghegan Hart, Rosa for Hindley

24 October 2020 by Michael Behringer

Geoghegan Hart Giro d'Italia

Cycling: Tao Geoghegan Hart has won the 20th stage of the Giro d'Italia. Jai Hindley is allowed to wear the pink jersey in the final time trial. However, the Australian and the Brit are at the same time!

Tao Geoghegan Hart Giro d'Italia Sestriere

Three times up to Sestriere

Showdown in Sestriere. Before the all-important time trial ends tomorrow in Milan, the pros had another chance to compete in the mountains today. The section from Alba to Sestriere took them over 190 kilometers. The ascent to the destination had to be mastered in three ways. For the first climbing test, the 31,8-kilometer ascent with an average gradient of 4,0 percent was selected. Then it went up the 6,9 kilometer long road with an average gradient of 7,2 percent twice. Before the top favorites fought for seconds there, a 21-strong breakaway group formed. Among other things, was there Arnaud Demare (Groupama – FDJ), who won the intermediate sprint and who can no longer be denied the Maglia Ciclamino.

21 men in the breakaway

  • Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R La Mondiale)
  • Andrea Vendrame (AG2R La Mondiale)
  • Jan Tratnik (Bahrain-McLaren)
  • Filippo Fiorelli (Bardiani – CSF)
  • Kamil Malecki (CCC)
  • Elijah Viviani (Cofidis)
  • Davide Ballerini (Deceuninck – Quick Step)
  • Mikkel Frolich Honoré (Deceuninck – Quick-Step)
  • Pieter Serry (Deceuninck – Quick Step)
  • Tanel Kangert (EF)
  • Arnaud Démare (Groupama – FDJ)
  • Simon Guglielmi (Groupama – FDJ)
  • Davide Cimolai (Israel Start-Up Nation)
  • Matthew Holmes (Lotto-Soudal)
  • One Augusto Rubio (Movistar)
  • Davide Villella (Movistar)
  • Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier (NTT)
  • Matteo Sobrero (NTT)
  • Julien Bernard (NTT)
  • Nicola Conci (Trek – Segafredo)
  • Brandon McNulty (UAE)

Kelderman again fails to follow

When it went up to Sestriere for the second time, the leading group fell apart, as did the group of favorites. One Augusto Rubio (Movistar) was initially in front as a soloist, but he was eventually caught by the approaching group of favourites. As expected, there was another duel between Sunweb and Ineos. Rohan Dennis (Ineos) acted as locomotive for Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos) and Jay Hindley (Sunweb). leader wilco kelderman (Sunweb) had to be torn down shortly before the summit and then tried together with et al Joao almeida (Deceuninck – Quick Step) and Vincenzo Nibali (Trek – Segafredo) to keep the gap within limits.

Geoghegan Hart wins, but Hindley gets pink

In the final ascent, the spectators were presented with the same picture as a few days ago. Only Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos) and Jai Hindey (Sunweb) were able to match the pace of Rohan Dennis (Ineos) follow. With 2,0 kilometers to go, Jai Hindley launched his attack. Although he got rid of Rohan Dennis at short notice, he was able to catch up again a little later. 700 meters later Hindley attacked again, wanting to gain a bigger lead over Geoghegan Hart before tomorrow's time trial. He got rid of Dennis again, but not Geoghegan Hart. So the two of them got to the final meters together – and this time the Briton won. That ties Hindley and Geoghegan Hart, but the Australian gets the pink jersey on hundredths in previous time trials. Due to the loss of time today wilco kelderman (Sunweb) will probably no longer be able to win the Giro d'Italia 2020. But a grand tour couldn't be more exciting than it is right now...
