Cycling: Sam Bennett won stage four of the Vuelta a Espana in a bunch sprint. The Irishman was able to intercept Jasper Philipsen shortly before the finish line. Pascal Ackermann was fourth as the best German.
Simon Geschke gets out of the Vuelta
Finally flat! That's what some drivers probably thought at the start of the fourth stage of the Vuelta a Espana. Because the 191,7-kilometer section from Garray to Ejea de los Caballeros is actually the first for the sprinters. Unfortunately, the Colombian was not there this morning Daniel Martinez (EF) and the German Simon Geschke (CCC). The "most beautiful beard in the peloton" was only nominated at short notice anyway. Tour stage winner Martinez fell two days ago and has probably not been able to recover from the consequences of the fall. The drivers still in the race put an average of over 51 kmh on the road at the beginning of today. Harry Tanfield (AG2R La Mondiale), Luis Angel Mate (Cofidis), Jesus Ezquerra (Burgos – BH) and Willie smit (Burgos – BH) formed the breakaway of the day. In the peloton, Bora – hansgrohe and Deceuninck – Quick-Step controlled the pace.
Sam Bennett confidently wins the mass sprint
Although the escape group tried to fight back for a long time, the mass sprint could not be prevented. As usual, this was perfectly prepared by the Belgian team Deceuninck – Quick-Step. Even if Jasper Phillipsen (UAE) already had a lead of several bike lengths Sam Bennett (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) still over. Pascal Ackermann (Bora – hansgrohe) couldn't hold onto his rear wheel and even fell back to fourth place. A second German was also strong: Max Kanter (Sunweb) is in seventh place.
