Cycling: In the pouring rain, Ion Izagirre celebrates his breakaway victory at the Vuelta a Espana. Meanwhile, Primoz Roglic loses his red jersey to Richard Carapaz.
Route change on the 6th stage
Actually, today's stage of the Vuelta a Espana would have included the Alto del Portalet, the Col d'Aubisque and the Col du Tourmalet. But because of the Corona regulations in France, the route was changed. The new route required 146,4 kilometers to be completed from Biescas to Aramón Formigal. No fewer than 23 riders crept into the day's break at the start of the race, including three riders each from Sunweb and Cofidis. Due to the good line-up and the large number of professionals, it quickly became clear that today's victory would go to a driver from the escape group. The two Germans George Zimmerman (CCC) and Jasha Sutterlin (Sunweb), however, had rather low chances of success due to the rather demanding profile.

Ion Izagirre wins after preliminary work by his brother
In the pouring rain has initially Gorka Izagirre (Astana) deposed by his companions. When he was asked again, his brother tried it on the final climb Ion Izaguirre (Astana). Behind them, the former leading group fell apart completely into its individual parts. And in the peloton, things got down to business even before the final climb. Some professionals had problems due to Ineos speeding up. However, these were difficult to recognize because all drivers were wearing their rain jackets and were therefore very difficult to assign. On the last mountain of the day, however, the balance of power became clear to everyone. Ion Izagirre was no longer caught and thus wins the sixth stage of the Vuelta a Espana.
Carapaz takes over red from Roglic
Takes over in the overall standings Richard Carapaz (Ineos) the leadership, who was able to convert the preliminary work of his team into success in an exemplary manner. Things went badly for Primois Roglic (Jumbo - Visma). Already isolated on the descent, he initially fought his way back up on his own. But he couldn't keep up with the best uphill today either. The Slovenian lost 43 seconds to the new overall leader. Daniel Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) and Hugh Carthy (EF) also pushed past. Before tomorrow's rest day, the overall ranking of the Vuelta a Espana has clearly taken shape. Felix Grossschartner (Bora – hansgrohe) from Austria is sixth after a strong day.
