Cycling: Michael Woods has won the seventh stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Canadian was part of a large breakaway and eventually prevailed ahead of Omar Fraile and Alejandro Valverde. Leader Richard Carapaz was able to defend his red jersey.
Valverde part of a big breakaway
After the first rest day, the Vuelta a Espana continued today with the seventh stage. Since all corona tests were negative, all remaining drivers were able to tackle the 159,7-kilometer section from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Villanueva de Valdegovia. This was ahead of all Remi Cavagna (Deceuninck - Quick Step). The 25-year-old Frenchman went on the offensive as a soloist and defended himself against the peloton for many kilometers. Numerous other attacks brought him back and the fight for the breakaway of the day started all over again. In the end, no less than 34 professionals were able to escape the peloton, including the two Germans George Zimmerman (CCC) and Jannik Steimle (Deceuninck - Quick Step). With it Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) was also part of the breakaway group, also a dangerous man for the general classification, Ineos had to contain the deficit of the peloton.
Woods plays poker and wins ahead of Fraile and Valverde
When it went up the Puerto de Orduña (7,8 km à 7,6%) for the second time, the leading group and the main field fell apart. Michael Woods (EF), William Martin (Cofidis), Omar friar (Astana), Nan's Peters (A2GR La Mondiale) and Alejandro Valverde crossed the summit first. Around 20 seconds behind, some of the former companions tried to catch up over the last 20 kilometers - in vain. The quintet should decide the day's victory among themselves, because the peloton was more than a minute behind. With 1,2 kilometers to go, Michael Woods launched his attack. The Canadian had taken it easy beforehand and was no longer able to take the lead. That paid off. Second is Omar Fraile ahead of Alejandro Valverde.
