Cycling: Sam Bennett won the mass sprint on the ninth stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Germans Pascal Ackermann and Max Kanter sprinted to places 2 and 4. However, since the jury intervened after the finish line, Sam Bennett was put back and Pascal Ackermann was declared the winner.
Sam Bennett with too much physical effort
Mass sprint at the Vuelta a Espana. With Aritz Bagues (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA) and John Philip Osorio (Burgos – BH) the sprinter teams only had to control two escapees today. The 157,7-kilometre ninth stage from Castrillo del Val to Aguilar de Campoo ended as expected in a sprint royal. This could again Sam Bennett (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) win – at least for the time being. Because after crossing the finish line, the jury intervened and put the Irishman back. Pascal Ackermann (Bora – hansgrohe) and Tanning Thijssen (Lotto – Soudal) moved up. Pascal Ackermann thus celebrates his first stage win at this year's Vuelta a Espana. Strong third place Max Kanter (Sunweb). There were no changes in the top 10 in the overall standings. As a birthday boy Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) broke down about 13 kilometers before the finish, the peloton was waiting for him.
