Mavic Cosmic SLR 45: Less (weight) is more!

16 October 2020 by Florian Nowak

Product news: Hardly any component on a racing bike is as crucial as the wheel or wheels. Because this is exactly where the orientation of the bike is finally determined. Wheels can align the bike in the direction of mountain goats, fast riders or more leisurely tourers. It gets particularly tricky when performance-oriented properties such as aerodynamics, low weight and stiffness have to be combined in one wheel set and the necessary stability and robustness must not be missing. This is exactly where the proven wheel manufacturer Mavic comes in with its new Mavic Cosmic SLR 45 and wants to offer sporty cyclists and athletes an ultimate solution without compromises.

Weight has always been one of the most important factors for cyclists - regardless of whether it is about man or machine or equipment. However, a gram less is not the same as a gram less, because the weight has a special influence due to the kinetic energy of parts that move. This means that a rotating mass, such as an impeller, requires additional energy to keep up or accelerate. But this is just one major factor to consider when designing wheels. There are also issues such as rolling resistance, which is significantly influenced by the tires. For example, tubeless tires roll relatively better, but involve more weight in the rim design. In addition, you also need a rim tape during assembly, which sometimes has to be attached very laboriously. In order to solve all these problems and to design a wheel without compromise, the Mavic engineers have thought about it and developed the new Mavic Cosmic SLR 45 wheel. This should combine a light concept with high aerodynamics and good rigidity.

The so-called Fore Carbon technology is used, which is the heart of the Cosmic SLR 45 design. This technology is the result of years of research and combines light weight and improved tubeless assembly with increased stiffness and easy repair options. The material is 10% lighter in the same form and at the same time stronger than conventional wheel designs. The wheelset also features Mavic Fore Carbon Technology spokes that fit directly into a co-molded metallic insert. The increased stability is due to the fact that these inserts do not require drilling in the upper rim bridge. In addition, thanks to this construction, no additional rim tape is required, repairs to the wheel and spokes are simplified and an additional 30 grams of weight per rim are saved.

For even better performance, the Mavic Cosmic SLR45 is equipped with the brand new Infinity Hub freewheel. This is intended to improve power transmission, durability and compatibility. Easy to service without special tools, Instant Drive 360 freewheel technology ensures fast engagement with high stiffness and durability and offers automatic bearing preload (QRM Auto). Designed for compatibility and ease of use, the Infinity Hub is convertible to all popular freewheel drive options and axle dimensions.
