Assos Skin Layers: The undershirt that makes the difference!

7 November 2020 by Florian Nowak

Product news: The best winter jacket, even Assos, is worth little if you don't pair it with the right undershirt. On the other hand, the right undershirt can upgrade the entire outfit and take it to the next level and get a lot more out of it than you might think at first glance. This is of course not least due to the fact that the undershirt acts directly on the skin as the immediate base layer as the first heat store and temperature regulator and is therefore enormously decisive as to how the layers above it behave. We have an overview of the Assos Skin Layers for you!

Assos Ultraz Winter LS Skin Layer

Extreme conditions require first class material. As a continuation of the Winter LS Skin Layer, the Ultraz version stores even more heat thanks to the wool blend and forms an even more effective protective shield against the wind. Especially during our cold test rides, this base layer kept us dry on the body and offered enough warmth. The sweat is wicked away as quickly as possible thanks to the high-quality and ideally matched material. In addition, the undershirt dries very quickly, which offers a pleasant feeling, especially after short stops. Because for us there is hardly anything worse when you have to go back into the cold with a damp undershirt after 5 minutes in the warm.

To deliver all of these attributes, the Ultraz Skin Layer is a complete overhaul of its predecessors with a comprehensively revised, lighter design and a new blend of textile fibers. The Ultraz model is about 10% lighter than the old long-sleeved winter skinFoil because this model uses a circular seamless structure. In other words, you can do without scratchy side seams here. In addition, the fabric was worked on for optimal performance and everything is designed for rides in icy temperatures. A robust fabric made of polypropylene and wool is used for this. The Assos Ultraz Baselayer is available for 120 euros.

Assos Skin Layer

Assos Winter LS Skin Layer

The "classic" is the Winter LS Skin Layer, which, with its insulating knitted structure and seamless design, offers an effective base layer on cold and wet days and is still a bit more breathable than the Ultraz version of the Assos Skin Layer. This keeps you warm and dry on cold days.

With this skin layer, the focus is primarily on temperature regulation, as this is crucial for performance in winter. Nevertheless, it must be able to store enough heat and keep it warm so that you are protected as well as possible on cold days. The Assos Winter LS Skin Layer is made from a thick fabric, has a high collar and is more stretchy than the spring/autumn model. This creates a layer under the other garments that insulates even better and at the same time increases flexibility, as you often have to struggle with the top layers.

The Winter LS Skin Layer boasts a comprehensively revised design and is a complete redesign with a new blend of textile fibers. The Circular Seamless structure is also used on this Assos Skin Layer, which means that there are no scratchy side seams. In addition, this product uses a winter-grade fabric made from carbon fibers and polypropylene yarns, which transports moisture away from the skin and insulates the middle of the body. So you're always comfortable on the road, even when things get supposedly uncomfortable. The skin layer is available for 100 euros.

Assos Winter LS Skin Layer Features:

  • Circular Seamless: A tubular knit design with no side seams for an extra soft and comfortable feel.
  • Set in sleeves: The sleeves are sewn directly into the armhole for unrestricted movement under layers of clothing.

Assos Spring/Fall LS Skin Layer

The Spring/Fall LS Skin Layer is made for not so cold days in winter, and of course as the name suggests in spring and autumn.

Long sleeves, seamless comfort and a new mid-weight yarn blend give this skin layer full protection and breathability in cooler weather.

The light insulation and long sleeves protect the entire upper body from wind and weather. In addition to heat-retaining comfort, temperature regulation is at the top of the fall/spring skin layer list. This undershirt completes every outfit and can be worn under a light long-sleeved jersey on milder days or under a thick jacket on cold rides. In addition to the long-sleeved model, there is also a short-sleeved variant, which can be worn as a perfect complement to outfits with arm warmers and is particularly useful for races, more intensive trips or simply warmer temperatures.

Assos Skin Layer

The proven features are also used with this Assos Skin Layer and not only ensure a good feeling, but also the best functionality.

  • Circular Seamless: A tubular knit design with no side seams for an extra soft and comfortable feel.
  • Set in sleeves: The sleeves are sewn directly into the armhole for unrestricted movement under layers of clothing.
