Giro Helios Spherical: New helmet with innovative Spherical technology for racing cyclists and gravel bikers

17 November 2020 by Andrew Waldera

Giro Helios Spherical

Product news: Equipped with Spherical technology, the new Giro Helios Spherical helmet offers road cyclists and gravel bikers the best possible protection against brain injuries in the event of a fall. The technology based on the MIPS Brain Protection System was developed by the Santa Cruz / California-based helmet manufacturer in cooperation with MIPS.

Giro Helios Spherical

The new Giro Helios Spherical was specially developed for use on and off the road and should not only offer the wearer the best possible protection against brain injuries, but also an exceptional fit. The compact and airy design hides a very innovative system with the Spherical technology, which is intended to significantly reduce the rotational forces that occur in the event of a fall. The technology based on the MIPS Brain Protection System dispenses with the plastic mesh on the inside of the helmet. Similar to a ball joint, two shells are used, which can move freely against each other within the helmet.

The different densities of the two foam shells ensure protection at both high and low speeds. According to the manufacturer, the MIPS sliding planes and the elastic mounts between the two shells made of nano-bead EPS foam also enable optimal airflow and thus improve cooling of the head. The system was developed in Giro's in-house laboratory in Scotts Valley in cooperation with MIPS. Of course, all helmets with Spherical technology meet the relevant CPSC, CE and AUS/NZ test standards, including the Giro Helios Spherical.

The outer shell of the helmet is manufactured using the InMolding process, which makes the helmet more resistant without adding weight. 15 ventilation openings in combination with the implemented wind tunnel system ensure a cool head. Internal channels guide the fresh air around the head. The Roc Loc 5 Air adjustment system allows the user to adjust the helmet both vertically and horizontally. The new Giro Helios Spherical is available in three sizes and five color variations at a price of 250 euros each. The helmet weighs 250 grams in size M.
