Sporty at the push of a button: Shimano's firmware update gives e-bikes a power boost

28 November 2020 by the editorial office

Product news: With the recently released Shimano firmware for e-bikes with the popular Shimano E5000 drive, the Japanese company can give its bikes a power boost if required. The update works very easily via the in-house app and gives e-bikes a new "sporty" setting.

This dynamic driving characteristic was specially designed by Shimano for the needs of commuters, for whom performance is more important than range optimization.

What exactly does the new attitude bring?

Previously, e-bikers could choose between the three modes ECO, NORMAL and HIGH within the "Comfort" setting. All of these modes are designed for inexpensive and lightweight e-bike systems with a balanced and comfortable ride.

The new "Sporty" setting is much more dynamic and comes with an ECO and a NORMAL mode. On the technical side, the maximum torque of 40 Nm and the general support at up to 25 km/h remain.

The new driving dynamics result from the fact that the support is increased compared to the input power of the biker. In ECO mode, the drive makes 60 percent of its own power available as additional power. In NORMAL mode it is even 125 percent. In short: With the firmware update you put more pressure on the pedal and get where you are faster.

This is how you benefit from the additional boost

  • Download the E-TUBE app from your app store. (Download)
  • Update the app so that the latest firmware is available.
  • Activate your e-bike and connect it wirelessly to the app.
  • Update your bike's firmware via the app.
  • You can now set the driving characteristics on your bike to "Sporty" in the drive unit. Later you can make the adjustment via the EW-EN100 unit or the Shimano STEPS display.
  • Disconnect and test the new mode. Have fun
