Wilier Filante SLR: Lightweight aero Italian

11 November 2020 by Florian Nowak

Product news: With the new Wilier Filante SLR, the Italian manufacturer has picked up the trend towards lightweight aerobikes and implemented them in a classic manner. In addition to the aerodynamics and an appropriate weight for such a bike, the stiffness-to-weight ratio of the new Filante SLR is particularly impressive.

The Wilier Filante SLR was developed to offer maximum aerodynamics in real conditions. For this purpose, in addition to wind tunnel tests, real test drives were also carried out in order not only to cover the classic angle of attack of the wind tunnel, but also to take into account the turbulence that occurs on every journey. Based on these results, all shapes and profiles of the bike were redesigned and geared towards an even faster ride.

Rounded edges ensure better performance, even if the airflow is disturbed. Also, the inside of the fork has been increased by 7mm, making it 13,6% wider than the Cento10PRO's fork. Also, the fork legs on the Filante SLR have been removed to reduce turbulence and improve aerodynamics. The cockpit also has a positive effect on the aerodynamics, which at the same time keeps all trains out of the wind and thus ensures a clean look. With pleasant curves and the shape you want to offer good ergonomics.

However, all the aerodynamic benefits would only be worth half as much if they came at the expense of weight. Thanks to the new aerodynamically optimized profiles, it was even possible to save additional weight in the frame construction. The round shapes with no blunt cuts use less material and less resin in the corners. This creates a more homogeneous frame, which results in a weight of 870 grams. With the specifications of the top model, the bike weighs exactly 6,8 kilos, which is still the limit of the UCI. Of course, the carbon layup of the Wilier Filante SLR, which corresponds to that of the Wilier 0 SLR, also plays a large part in this. Thanks to the different types of carbon used together with liquid crystal polymer, the particular positioning of the fibers and the construction technology, the new lightweight aero has managed to achieve top results in terms of lightness and rigidity. The lower overall weight has increased the STW factor by 12,5% compared to the highest level of torsional stiffness. This should be clearly noticeable in the steering precision, in the handling and in a safe driving experience, even at high speeds and on technical sections.

In order to enable an even more individual alignment, the steerer tube was no longer beveled, which means that up to 35mm spacers can be mounted under the handlebars. By combining frame sizes, handlebar sizes and spacers, 240 different fittings can be achieved without overlapping between one combination and the other. This number doubles when you include the two available seat posts with 15mm or 0mm offset in the fitting.

Wilier Filante SLR – models at a glance

Most models of the new Filante SLR are available with different wheel variants. Unfortunately we don't have any pictures of the individual models yet, but we will submit them later.
