Cycling: new name, familiar goals. In the coming season, Team Sunweb will go hunting for stages and classics under the name DSM. The previous namesake remains as a secondary sponsor.
DSM brings a lot of money with it
The Dutch chemical company DSM will be the new namesake of the Sunweb team, as the team management announced today. There is also a switch from Cervelo bikes to Scott. The team, which was so successful in 2020, surprised with these innovations at the team presentation in the DSM Innovation Center in Geleen, the Netherlands. The distinctive stripes will remain, but they are now drawn in light blue through the black jersey. DSM produces food supplements and artificial vitamins, among other things. The company is listed on the stock exchange and has around 22.000 employees worldwide.
chief coach Rudi Kemna:
“We want to develop further. For women, the goal is to stay at the top. For the men, we will continue to work with the classic group that was so successful this year. We will also focus on the sprint and develop our GC riders. In the Grand Tours we will go hunting for stages again.”
Sunweb celebrates a successful 2020
Admittedly, before the start of the 2020 season, hardly anyone expected such a strong Sunweb year. Tom Dumoulin left the team and with that the team lost their figurehead. But the departure could be more than compensated. The new stars are Hai Hindley and Marc Hirschi. While the Australian surprisingly finished second in the overall standings at the Giro d'Italia, the Swiss won a stage of the Tour de France and the Fleche Wallonne. Romain Bardet is expected to cause a sensation in France in 2021. They have also signed two huge talents in Germany's Marco Brenner and Norway's Andreas Leknessund. The departures of Michael Matthews, Wilco Kelderman and Sam Oomen can also be tolerated.
