Blubrake: The first ABS system for cargo e-bikes

March 25, 2021 by the editorial office

Product news: The strong growth in the use of cargo bikes in logistics and in individual mobility leads to an ever-increasing demand for safety with these bikes. With the first anti-lock braking system (ABS) developed by blubrake for cargo e-bikes, riding on these bikes is now much safer. The developers “copied” the principle from the automotive industry.

In recent years, cargo bikes with electric assistance have conquered the cities. Because it now seems obvious that these will play a decisive role in the future of urban mobility. Whether for personal or professional use, e-cargo bikes have grown enormously in popularity, especially in northern European countries.

Market analysis shows a strong growth trend with sales increasing by 2020% in 53 (according to City Changer Cargo Bike Project surveys). This means that e-cargo bikes are now one of the key drivers of the urban mobility revolution and “last mile” logistics.

Blubrake ABS: Safety comes first

The rapid spread of e-cargo bikes has led to a strong demand for more safety. Cargo bikes are used to transport heavy loads and can reach relatively high speeds. Due to this configuration and function, the braking process for e-cargo bikes is a particularly critical moment. This is especially true when the carrier is empty and sudden or unexpected braking causes instability, skidding and loss of control.

In order to be able to offer more safety on poorly-adhering surfaces or in unfavorable weather conditions, blubrake has developed the first and only ABS (anti-lock braking system for brakes) specifically for e-cargo bikes. Thanks to the cooperation of various industry giants, it will be launched in the next few months.

“With these vehicles, braking is a particularly delicate moment. Cargo e-bikes are heavier and often faster than normal e-bikes and tend to be unstable, especially when the load is empty. The ABS prevents the front wheel from locking up, prevents it from slipping and gives the bike more stability,” says Fabio Todeschini, founder and CEO of Blubrake. "Our team has succeeded in developing a solution that is unique on the market and meets the need for security and reliability."

Blubrake E-Cargo-Bike ABS: How it works

Blubrake's ABS, which aspires to become the safety standard for every e-cargo bike on the market, consists of three elements:

A Sensor measures the speed of the front wheel and transmits the information to a control unit. Based on the measurement results of the pace sensor and the accelerometer Within the framework, the dynamics of the bike are calculated so that potentially dangerous situations are identified. In such dangerous situations, the Actuator and controls the hydraulic pressure of the front wheel brake. This in turn ensures an even braking process and increased stability and controllability of the e-cargo bike.

blubrake's ABS is suitable for all types of e-cargo bikes. In addition, it is an open system that can be combined with all commercially available hydraulic brakes and drive systems from other suppliers. Thanks to a patented AI system, Blubrake's ABS also works flawlessly on a wide variety of surfaces, including particularly slippery and accident-prone paths (gravel, cobblestones, leaves) or in rain and fog.

Blubrake's goal with this technology is not only to make the cargo e-bike a particularly environmentally friendly and sustainable means of transport, but also a particularly safe one - so that its mass use both in individual mobility and in urban logistics is nothing more opposed.
