Jasper Stuyven annoys the top favorites
Jasper stuyven (Trek – Segafredo) is the name of the winner at Milan – Sanremo 2021. The Belgian was able to keep up with the strongest pros up and down the Poggio and finally even pulled away in the last three kilometers. He caught the perfect moment when the big favorites were stalking each other. Shortly afterwards he recognized this opportunity Soren Kragh Andersen (DSM). The Dane was still able to catch up, but was then clearly inferior in the sprint and ultimately only finished 9th because of the rushing group of pursuers. Complete the podium Caleb ewan (Lotto – Soudal) and wout van aert (Jumbo - Visma). Best German was Maximilian schachmann (Bora – hansgrohe) in 14th place. Shortly after Jasper Stuyven's decisive attack, he tried to move forward again, but was defeated by Michael Matthews (DSM) on the rear wheel more or less stopped.
Ineos strong with the Cipressa and the Poggio
Led by Team Ineos, a very large peloton crossed the Cipressa. In the descent there was a temporary selection. The peloton was split into several groups going downhill, but a few pros who had been left behind managed to catch up on the Via Aurelia. So it finally came to the showdown at Poggio. Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) attacked first. However, he was not able to distance himself from his strongest opponents. 15 riders rode down the descent together and were ultimately to decide the victory among themselves
8 escapees over 250 km in the lead
Eight breakaways characterized the 299-kilometer 112th edition of Milan - Sanremo until it became a matter for the favorites at the end of the race. Mattia Much (Androni – Giocattoli), Filippo Tagliani (Androni – Giocattoli), Andrea Perón (Novo-Nordisk), CharlesPlanet (Novo-Nordisk), Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert), Alessandro Tonelli (Bardiani – CSF), Matthew Norsgaard (Movistar) and Nicola Conci (Trek-Segafredo) were now more than 7 minutes ahead of the main field. There the teams Jumbo - Visma, Deceuninck - Quick-Step and Alpecin - Fenix took over the command. The distance was reduced and the fugitives finally caught up as expected. Up the Cipressa, Taco van der Hoorn picked up the last escapee with 24 kilometers to go.
