Cycling: The final stage of the Tour of Catalonia goes to Thomas De Gendt. Known as the king of breakaways, the Belgian prevailed as a soloist in Barcelona. The Ineos team could not be denied the triple triumph in the overall standings.
De Gendt celebrates in Barcelona
Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) finished the 2021 Vuelta a Catalunya with a stunning breakaway victory . The 34-year-old Belgian arrived in Barcelona solo, living up to his reputation as a breakaway specialist. Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious) and Attila Valter (Groupama-FDJ) finished second and third, respectively. Swiss rider Sebastien Reichenbach (Groupama-FDJ) won the sprint for fourth place, while fellow Belgian Marc Hirschi (UAE) finished seventh.
Yates wins before Porte and Thomas
The 100th edition of the Volta ao Catalunya was absolutely dominated by Team Ineos Grenadiers. The British squad swept the podium at the end of the seven-day stage race. Adam Yates claimed the overall victory ahead of his teammates Richie Porte and Geraint Thomas . The competition was completely outmatched. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) finished a strong fourth. The veteran and former world champion impressed with his typically aggressive riding style. Ultimately, he was only beaten by the Ineos trio. Wilco Kelderman 's (Bora-Hansgrohe) performance was also a positive one. The Dutchman demonstrated that he is a good fit for his new team and that he will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.
