Laigueglia Trophy: Mollema wins eventful one-day race

March 3, 2021 by Michael Behringer

Mollema Trophy Laigueglia

Cycling: Bauke Mollema won the 58th Trofeo Laigueglia. The Dutchman broke away from the first group in an eventful race and couldn't be caught anymore. Last year's winner and teammate Giulio Ciccone also played a part in this victory.

Mollema Trophy Laigueglia

Mollema plays the majority perfectly

In perhaps the most exciting and eventful edition of the Trofeo Laigueglia has today Build Mollema (Trek – Segafredo) grabbed the win. With around 16 kilometers to go, the Dutchman broke away from a group of eight. Shortly before, the outliers of the day were set. Many attacks, including from Egan Bernal (Ineos) and Mikel Landa (Bahrain – Victorious) made for a fast and tough race. As the American team with last year's winner Julius Ciccone (Trek – Segafredo) and Build Mollema (Trek – Segafredo) was in the majority, they played it off perfectly. While the Dutchman drove towards victory, the Italian acted as a brake on the pursuers.

Beautiful race on the Ligurian coast

The 58th Trofeo Laigueglia led the pros over 202 kilometers today, starting and finishing in Laigueglia. The small community with fewer than 2.000 inhabitants is located on the Ligurian coast in the Italian province of Savona. The race is characterized by a wavy profile with the toxic climbs Capo Mele and Colla Micheri, which have to be completed several times in the last third. Only Italians have been successful in the past six years. Last year's winner Julius Ciccone (Trek – Segafredo) started with number 1.
