Cycling: Felix Großschartner still made it. The Austrian won the fifth stage of the Tour of the Alps. He celebrates his first win of the season after just missing out. Simon Yates didn't let the overall victory be taken away from him.
Großschartner with the decision in the final climb
At the end of the 45th Tour of the Alps, the 120,9 kilometer section from Valle del Chiese/Idroland to Riva del Garda had to be mastered. Despite several mountain classifications, the stage was classified as easier than the previous sections. Accordingly, some breakaways felt able to fight for the day's victory. But in the end only one person could be happy about it at the destination: Felix Grossschartner (Bora – hansgrohe) was able to break away from his fellow competitors with his attack on the final climb. The Austrian couldn't be caught on the descent.
Simon Yates celebrates a sovereign overall victory
Numerous breakaways tried to finish ahead of the peloton today. Among others are Thibaut Pinot (Groupama – FDJ) and Daniel Martin (Israel Start-Up Nation) went on the offensive. Also the German George Steinhauser (Tirol KTM) and the Austrians Felix Grossschartner (Bora – hansgrohe) and Herman Pernsteiner (Bahrain – Victorious) tried their luck. In the last climb, Felix Großschartner launched the decisive attack. His former companions could no longer follow him. The peloton gave up the pursuit. The men of Simon yates (BikeExchange) controlled the pace and led him to the sovereign overall victory.
