Cycling: Caleb Ewan has won stage seven of the 2021 Giro d'Italia, earning his second victory at this year's Tour of Italy. The Australian won comfortably and left no doubt that he is the fastest man in the peloton.
Ewan celebrates second stage win
Caleb ewan (Lotto – Soudal) secured his second stage win in this year's Tour of Italy on the seventh stage of the Giro d'Italia. The Australian won ahead of the Italian on the slightly uphill home stretch Davide Cimolai (Israel Start-Up Nation) and the Belgian Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Fenix) . At first it looked as if Fernando Gaviria (UAE) best chance of stage win. But the Colombian started the sprint way too early and totally gave up in the final meters. Peter Sagan (Bora – hansgrohe) missed out on a top placement because he was trapped on the right-hand side of the road. Even after today's section of 181 kilometers from Notaresco to Termoli, Leader keeps Attila Valter (Groupama – FDJ) the Maglia Rosa. The Hungarian crossed the finish line with the peloton. Best German was today Max Kanter (DSM) in eighth place.
Pellaud back in the breakaway
At the beginning of the race, the Swiss Simon Pellaud (Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec), the Italian Umberto Marengo (Bardiani – CSF – Faizanè and the Briton Mark Christian (EOLO – Kometa) detach from the main field. The trio never really got a chance to win the day, however, as the sprinter teams kept the gap within limits. Especially Lotto - Soudal was very involved in the tracking work. In this way, the breakaways could be caught in a relatively controlled manner in the last phase of the race.
38-year-old Pozzovivo resigns
Unfortunately it is no longer included Dominic Pozzo alive (Qhubeka-Assos). The 38-year-old Italian, who has finished in the top 6 six times in his career at the Giro d'Italia, fell twice yesterday on a wet road. Also his compatriot Manuel Belletti (EOLO – Kometa) gave up the race yesterday.
