Lafay wins with the right timing

Breakaway coup on the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia. victor lafay (Cofidis) was part of a nine-man breakaway that held off the peloton. In the crisp final climb, the Frenchman waited long enough to ignite his turbo. After 170 kilometers he arrived victorious in Guardia Sanframondi and gave his French team the first stage win in the Tour of Italy in 11 years. Second place went to the Italian Francesco Cavazzi (EOLO cometa) before German Nickias Arndt (DSM). The favorites didn't attack each other on the final climb.

Valter stays in pink

In today's exceptionally good weather, 9 breakaways have gained a lead of more than 8 minutes at times. Besides the German Nickias Arndt (DSM) were in the escape group Alexis Gougeard (AG2R - Citroën), victor lafay (Cofidis), Kobe Goossens (Lotto – Soudal), Fernando Gaviria (UAE), Victor Campenaerts (Qhubeka – Assos), Francesco Cavazzi (EOLO cometa), Giovanni Carboni (Bardiani – CSF – Faizanè) and Nelson Oliveira (Movistar) included. Especially the latter made sure that the team of the leader in the peloton drove behind at some point. Because the Portuguese was just a little over 15 minutes behind the overall leader before the start of this stage Attila Valter (Groupama – FDJ).

Ewan leaves the Giro d'Italia

Nachdem Caleb ewan (Lotto – Soudal) won the fifth and seventh stages of the Giro d'Italia, he dropped out today. The Australian didn't fall today, but is suffering from knee pain, according to the team. It was to be assumed anyway that he would not finish the Tour of Italy. After all, the fast sprinter also wants to contest the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana this year. Automatically takes over due to his retirement from the Giro d'Italia Tim Merlier (Alpecin – Fenix) took the lead in the points classification. The Belgian won stage two in a bunch sprint.
