Cycling: Michael Woods won the fourth stage of the Tour de Romandie in heavy rain. This also makes him the new overall leader. Opponent Geraint Thomas fell 20 m before the finish line in the sprint for the day's win and thus not only missed the yellow jersey, but possibly also the stage win.
Woods WINS, Thomas with a bitter fall
Michael Woods (Israel Start-Up Nation) can look forward to the day's victory on the fourth stage of the Tour de Romandie. 17 seconds after he crossed Ben O'Connor (AG2R – Citroen) crossed the finish line. The tragic figure of the day is Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers). The Brit fell 20 meters from the finish line in the sprint for the stage win when he dismounted and his right hand or front wheel slipped. Thomas is now 11 seconds behind in the overall standings. Without this fall he would have been the overall leader. The previous leader Marc Soler (Movistar) attacked on the final climb but couldn't get away and was later caught out by a counterattack by his opponents. Again, the pros of the Tour de Romandie suffered from bad weather conditions. From Sion to Thyon, 161,3 kilometers had to be completed at low temperatures and mostly in the rain.
Pellaud in the breakaway
Josef cerny (Deceuninck – Quick Step), Mads Würtz Schmidt (Israel Start Up Nation), Kobe Goossens (Lotto – Soudal), Matthew Holmes (Lotto – Soudal), Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF-Nippo), Simone Petilli (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert) and the Swiss Simon Pellaud (Swiss Cycling) made up the group of the day today. Initially gifted with a large lead from the peloton, the gap then narrowed significantly when the fight for the podium began among the favorites. With Cort Nielsen and Petilli, the last two breakaways were finally caught when Michael Woods (Israel Start-Up Nation) and Ben O'Connor (AG2R – Citroen) continued their attack and took the lead.
