Pirelli SmartTUBE: Lightweight, compact TPU tubes for road, gravel and MTB

14 May 2021 by Andrew Waldera

Product news: Pirelli is now offering the new SmarTUBE for all of the brand's clincher models. Due to the high protection, the low weight and the very compact shape, the tubes made of TPU should be an absolute must-have for racing cyclists, gravel bikers and mountain bikers.

The new SmarTUBE, whose technology is based on the tire developments of the World Tour teams, is now available for all of the brand's clincher models. According to Pirelli, the weight of the hose has been reduced by up to 70% compared to the already light latex hoses. Pirelli was also able to compress the tube properly when it came to packing dimensions: The manufacturer specifies 50% less volume, which means that the replacement tube should fit anywhere. These quite impressive values could be realized through the use of TPU. The material was chosen by the engineers because of its outstanding performance compared to conventional butyl. The SmarTUBE was developed in a long and particularly careful process. The clincher version is largely based on feedback from the World Tour project. The new hose aims to fully exploit the performance potential of Pirelli's clinchers and thus reach an even larger target group of consumers and fans.

Pirelli SmartTUBE

The bright yellow SmarTUBE with a black Presta valve is available for both road (P ZERO) and MTB (Scorpion). Furthermore, in addition to the models for the clinchers of the Cinturato range, a reinforced version for gravel bikes and long distances is available. The latter design is said to offer double the puncture protection at the same weight as the lightest butyl tubes currently available. The price for the new SmarTUBE Line is 29,90 euros.
