Tour de Suisse #6: Andreas Kron wins because Rui Costa is relegated

June 11, 2021 by Michael Behringer

Andreas Kron Tour de Suisse

Cycling: Andreas Kron won the sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse. The Dane was part of a large breakaway group and pulled away with two companions on the final climb. He then lost the sprint to Rui Costa, but as the Portuguese rode an illegal wave, Kron was declared the winner.

Andreas Kron wins, Rui Costa is relegated

Once again, a breakaway group prevailed at the Tour de Suisse. Directly after the start in Fiesch we went up the Gotthard Pass. Here it came surprisingly early to an attack by Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck - Quick Step). However, after the Frenchman realized that the peloton didn't really let him go, he dropped back. A breakaway group of more than 30 men formed at times, which fell apart at the Lukmanier Pass. For a long time it looked like a solo victory by David of the Cross (UAE) out. The Spaniard shook off all his companions on the penultimate mountain and didn't let himself be caught on the descent either. His flight only came to an end on the final climb up to the destination of Disentis Sedrun. Herman Pernsteiner (Bahrain-Victorious), Rui Costa (UAE) and Andrew Kron (Lotto – Soudal) were able to catch up and decide the day's victory among themselves after a total of 130,1 kilometers. The ex-world champion Rui Costa, who was strong in sprinting, was actually in the lead. However, since the Portuguese sprinted first to the far right and later to the far left of the road, he was – rightly so – set back. That's the name of the winner of the day, Andreas Kron. The Dane would have passed the Portuguese with his excess speed.

Carapaz remains overall leader

The favorites for overall victory let the group do their thing and for their part concentrated on the fight for valuable seconds. But the Ineos Grenadiers team around Leader Richard Carapaz kept the pace uphill so high that nobody really dared to attack. In this way, the Ecuadorian remains in front in the overall standings.

Alaphilippe punished, Van der Poel caught a cold

Wasn't even at the start today Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix). The Dutch champion, who led the overall standings until yesterday and even made it into the breakaway wearing the yellow jersey, got out of the Tour de Suisse with a cold. got 20 seconds Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) buzzed up. The Frenchman allowed himself to be fed without permission yesterday, as he did at the Tour de France last year.
