Cycling: Romain Bardet scored a double at the Vuelta a Espana. The Frenchman won stage 14 and took over the mountain jersey. The Norwegian Odd Christian Eiking continues to lead in the overall standings.
Bardet strongest of 18 breakaways
Another breakaway win at the Vuelta a Espana! The 14th stage of the Vuelta a Espana covered 165,7 kilometers from Don Benito to Pico Villuercas and was an affair for the escape group at the end of the day. Romain Bardet (DSM) was part of an 18-man breakaway group that – at least partially – held its own in front of the group of favourites. The Frenchman has two reasons to be happy because of his strong performance. Because the 30-year-old not only won the stage, but also took the lead in the mountains classification.
Eiking remains first overall
Behind Romain Bardet complete the Spaniard Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) and the Australian Jay Vine (Alpecin – Fenix) the podium. In the main field, nothing happened among the favorites for a long time. The Cofidis team tried to find Leader Odd Christian Eiking (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert Matériaux) to hang around William Martin (Cofidis) to enable the red jersey. But that didn't work. Instead could Miguel Angel Lopez (Movistar) drive out a few seconds.
