Cycling: Rein Taaramäe has won the third stage of the Vuelta a Espana. The Estonian triumphed as a breakaway and also takes over the red jersey with his victory.
Taaramäe wins again after 10 years
With his 34 years Purely Taaramäe (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert Matériaux) proved that he can still climb. The Estonian won the mountain finish at the Picón Blanco and slipped into the red jersey at the same time. He was part of a breakaway group that together held their own in front of the peloton up to the final climb. When things went steeply uphill, Rein Taaramäe proved unstoppable. Already 10 years ago he won a stage at the Vuelta a Espana. The American Joe Dombrowski (UAE) was ahead of the French Kenny Elissonde (Trek – Segafredo) Second in stage.
Carapaz loses time
The third day of the Vuelta a Espana went much less well for Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers). The reigning Olympic champion surprisingly had to let the group of favorites go on the final climb and lost valuable seconds. Crossed as the first serious classification driver Enric Mas Nicolau (Movistar) ahead of teammate Miguel Angel Lopez (Movistar) crossed the finish line in fourth. Shortly thereafter followed Primois Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) the top favourites.
