Cycling: The European Road Championships in Trento have started. In the northern Italian region of Trentino-South Tyrol, the Europeans will fight for gold, silver and bronze until Sunday. The Federation of German Cyclists can look forward to medals on the first day. Antonia Niedermaier surprisingly won silver in the juniors category and the German team did the same in the mixed category.
Germany beaten only by Italy in mixed
With a strong performance, the German mixed relay in Trento earned the silver medal. Miguel Heidemann, Justin Wolf, Max Walscheid, Corinna Lechner, Mieke Kröger and Tanja Erath were only beaten by the hosts from Italy on the 44,8 kilometer course. Thanks to Filippo Ganna at the start, the Italians were the clear favorites anyway. In the end, however, they were only 21 seconds faster than the Germans. The women and men of the Netherlands secured third place. The Austrians can look forward to a respectable fifth place.

Juniors celebrate Belgian double victory
One nation in particular had reason to celebrate in the juniors' individual time trial. With Alec Segaert and Cian Uijtdebroeks two Belgians fought a duel for gold in a completely different league. In the end, after 22,4 kilometers, the first-named racer was almost 5 seconds ahead of his compatriot. 40 seconds behind the winner of the day Eddy le Huitouze from France happy about bronze. Best German was Emil Herzog in rank 8.

Antonia Niedermaier wins silver in the juniors
The first medal for the Federation of German Cyclists was awarded at the first European Championship event. Antonia Niedermaier won the silver medal behind the Russian in the junior women's individual time trial Alena Ivanchenko and before the Dutch woman Elise Uijen. The 18-year-old was 32 seconds short of a gold medal. Remarkable when we consider that the ski mountaineer only really started racing this year. In ski mountaineering, she has already been a double world champion among the juniors. In the future, her career in both sports should run parallel. Antonia Niedermaier is currently driving for RSV Götting Bruckmühl.
