Cycling: Sonny Colbrelli has won Paris – Roubaix. The Italian left all his competitors behind in a mud battle peppered with many crashes. Jonasrutsch drove through an impressive performance as the best German in 11th place.
Sonny Colbrelli braves the mud
What a mud fightSonny Colbrelli (Bahrain - Victorious) has won the 118th edition of Paris - Roubaix and thus entered the history books. The 257,7-kilometre mother of all classics seemed tougher than ever. The pros not only had to contend with bad roads all the way from Compiègne to Roubaix, but also with adverse weather conditions. Although the rain stopped towards the end, the roads were wet and the pavé sectors were covered in mud and puddles. But the Italian European Champion was not impressed! Together with Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Fenix) and Florian Vermeersch (Lotto – Soudal) he reached the velodrome and won the sprint. Afterwards he let his joy run wild and burst into tears. Curious: All three drivers who are on the podium this year drove their first Paris - Roubaix in 2021.
Gianni Moscon as a tragic figure
For a long time it looked as if Paris – Roubaix would take part this year Gianni moscon (Ineos Grenadiers) go. The Italian led the race as a soloist for long stretches and already had a lead of almost two minutes. He was slowed down first by a puncture and then by a fall. After the wheel change, he had significantly greater problems controlling his bike. 16 kilometers from the finish he was from Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix), Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain – Victorious) and Florian Vermeersch (Lotto – Soudal) caught up and left standing.
Jonasrutsch best German
The German-speaking drivers had no luck today. The Swiss Stefan Kung (Groupama – FDJ) was in the first big breakaway group, but came along with the Austrian Mark Haller (Bahrain – Victorious) fell and flew back. same thing happened Maximilian Walscheid (Qhubeka – NextHash), who was able to fight back afterwards, but had nothing to gain in the final. Nils Politt (Bora – hansgrohe) seemed to be just as unable to cope with the conditions as John Degenkolb (Lotto – Soudal). They were - like the German champion Maximilian schachmann (Bora – hansgrohe) – left behind by the peloton at an early stage. Just as Schachmann was able to fight back, he fell. Particularly strong presented itself Jonas slip (EF). The German attacked around 40 kilometers from the finish from the group wout van aert (Jumbo - Visma). In Roubaix he finally finished 11th.
