Cycling: Emma Hinze won the gold medal in the first purely German sprint final of a world championship, ahead of Lea Sophie Friedrich. Joachim Eilers secured bronze in the 1.000 meter time trial.
Hinze becomes Sprint World Champion again
The 24 year old Emma Hinze successfully defended her world championship title in the sprint. In the first purely German World Cup final in history, she was able to confidently beat her compatriot in two runs in Roubaix Leah Sophie Friedrich push through. Both previously won gold together in the team sprint. They won their semi-finals against their competitors from Canada. Lea Sophie Friedrich defeated Lauriane Genest and Emma Hinze knocked out Olympic champion Kelsey Mitchell. Both semifinals ended after two runs.
Emma Hinze:
"I didn't believe in it beforehand because I didn't feel as good as before Berlin. It's really cool. The break after the Olympics was very short. I hope that I can now really wear the jersey in major competitions for a year. I still had a few bills to settle."
Eilers wins bronze in the time trial
The men can also look forward to a medal. Joachim Eilers won the bronze medal in the 1.000 meter time trial behind Nicholas Paul of Trinidad and Tobago and world champion Jeffrey Hoogland of the Netherlands. The Federation of German Cyclists now has 6 medals at the Track World Championships in Roubaix.
