World Cup: First victories in Besancon for Brand and Iserbyt

29 November 2021 by Michael Behringer

Iserbyt Brand Besancon

Cycling: In Besancon, France, there was a cycling world cup for the first time. While Lucinda Brand won easily in the women's race, Eli Iserbyt narrowly won ahead of Toon Aerts in the men's race.

Fire now with a point buffer

In front of numerous spectators Lucinda Brand won the first World Cup race in Besancon, France. The Dutch won in the mud in front of the surprisingly strong Canadian Maghalie Rochette. The Dutch woman was third Denise Betsema, who is now 29 points behind the leader in the overall World Cup. She is particularly happy about this lead, as she will be absent in Val di Sole due to a training camp.

Lucinda Brand:
“It's nice that I now have a good lead. I won't be there in Val di Sole, so it's nice to have a buffer now."

The day's result in Besancon

1. Lucinda Brand (Baloise Trek Lions)
2. Maghalie Rochette (Specialized) +0:26
3. Denise Betsema (Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal) + 0:34

Iserbyt benefits from fall

A much more exciting race was offered to the spectators by the men. Eli Iserbyt and Toon Aerts fought until the final round. Yesterday's winner finally fell there, paving the way for Eli Iserbyt. The Belgian crossed the finish line ten seconds ahead of his compatriot, while the competition lost almost two minutes to the day's winner.

Eli Iserbyt:
“I had good legs today and I think Toon did too. After Toon's mistake I knew I just had to go at my own pace and that was enough to win today. Especially with this type of track and the audience you have to stay calm. If you get too excited, you start making mistakes.”

The day's result in Besancon

1. Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal)
2. Toon Aerts (Baloise Trek Lions) +0:10
3. Pim Ronhaar (Baloise Trek Lions) +1:44

1. Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal) 285 points
2. Toon Aerts (Baloise Trek Lions) 206 points
3. Lars Van der Haar (Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal) 175 points
