Team introduction: 11 new ones are turning Trek – Segafredo upside down

12 December 2021 by Michael Behringer

Trek-Segafredo

Cycling: Trek – Segafredo has to moderate the biggest upheaval between 2021 and 2022. 9 drivers leave the team and 11 new ones join. The most prominent departure is Vincenzo Nibali. How will the racing team align in the future?

Trek – Segafredo 2021: Below expectations

The Trek – Segafredo team was not able to celebrate any great successes in 2021. Almost all top performers fell short of expectations. Vincenzo Nibali won the Tour of Sicily, but was absent from the important races. He had to give up the Tour de France and he was only 18th in the Giro d'Italia Julius Ciccone couldn't really show what he can do. He did not finish both the Giro and the Vuelta. So it was other riders who saved the 2021 season for Trek – Segafredo. Build Mollema won a tour leg and rejoined the groups throughout the year. At Kuurne – Brussels – Kuurne cheered Mads Pedersen. However, it was the biggest success for years Jasper Stuyven. The Belgian won Milan – Sanremo and with it a monument of cycling. One waits in vain for the breakthrough Quinn Simmons. After all, the 20-year-old won the Tour de Wallonie. But on his first Grand Tour – the Vuelta a Espana – he was only able to shine in third place on one stage. Nevertheless, one thing is certain: the future belongs to him.

Trek – Segafredo 2022: Unclear direction

Next to Bora - hansgrohe, the Trek - Segafredo team probably has the biggest upheaval of all WorldTour teams ahead of them. With Vincenzo Nibali you lose one of the best drivers of the past 20 years. But the Italian simply couldn't put his qualities on the road in 2021. The other eight departures can be gotten over because they are not winning drivers. In return, Trek – Segafredo has signed eleven newcomers. However, a king transfer cannot be identified. Dario Cataldo and Antwan Tolhoek are strong in the mountains, but will probably not be able to compete in the overall rankings in a Grand Tour. Tony gallopin is 34, is still a fast man, but he also seems to be above his peak. Markus Hoelgaard has not yet underlined his qualities at WorldTour level. In addition, four drivers who are not yet 23 years old join the team. The American racing team wants to lower the average age, but they will not be able to ensure victories, at least in 2022. The question arises: Who else should do it? Trek – Segafredo will also be hoping for Bauke Mollema, Jasper Stuyven, Mads Pedersen and Giulio Ciccone in the coming season.
