Giant Control Tower 1+ floor pump in the test: It's all a matter of the head

February 4rd 2022 by Andrew Waldera

Giant Control Tower 1+ floor pump

Test Giant Control Tower 1+: Since the company was founded in 1972, the bicycle manufacturer Giant has been pursuing the mission of improving the lives of cyclists. A self-imposed obligation that is not only implemented in the brand's bikes and e-bikes. The Control Tower 1+ floor pump is very good proof that an innovative product with fine detailed solutions does not have to be overpriced.

Structure of the Giant Control Tower 1+ floor pump

The Control Tower 1+ floor pump impresses with its very solid construction. Both the cylinder and the double base are made of steel. This is noticeable in terms of weight, but the Control Tower 1+ looks almost indestructible. With a pump capacity of up to 11 bar (160 PSI), more material is certainly not wrong. The 2,5-inch analog pressure gauge at the upper end of the pump provides information about the current air pressure when inflating a tire. The AutoHead pump head, which fits the Auto and French valves, is particularly innovative – but more on that later. Also clever: the ergonomic plastic handle has two adapters in the cavity for pumping up balls and air mattresses. The pump hose has an impressive length of 119 centimeters, which results in a very large radius of action.

function and feel

Before inflating a tire comes the big moment for the Giant Control Tower 1+ floor pump: placing the Auto Head pump head on the valve. The pump head adapts to the valve completely independently. After turning the aluminum lever, the pump head fits like a glove - regardless of whether it has an auto or French valve. At the same time, in this position, the lever releases the pressure release button, which facilitates precise adjustment of the air pressure. However, the release of the lever should be done carefully, as it snaps back unchecked. The pumping process as such is very uncomplicated. Thanks to the robust construction made of steel and the double, generously dimensioned base, the pump stands rooted to the ground. The manometer is easy to read, only below 1 bar is the display insufficient.
