Cycling: Michal Kwiatkowski won the Amstel Gold Race 2022. The Pole prevailed in the photo finish by a hair's breadth ahead of Frenchman Benoit Cosnefroy. The Italian Marta Cavalli came as a surprise for the women. Germany's Liane Lippert was third.
Kwiatkowski and Cosnefroy cheer
It can hardly get any closer in a bike race. Even minutes after crossing the finish line, it wasn't clear who could claim to be the winner of the 56th Amstel Gold Race. As well as Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) as well Benoit Cosnefroy (Ag2r – Citröen) were told they had won the race. In the end, the photo finish decides: the Pole has the edge. With the 254,1 kilometer long Amstel Gold Race from Maastricht to Valkenburg, Michal Kwiatkowski adds another big win to his palmares.
Nobody drives with van der Poel
For a long time, a breakaway group determined what was happening. But the fugitives – including the Swiss John Jacobs (Movistar) - were finally placed entirely on the crest of the Eyserbosweg. When it went up the Keutenberg, sat Michal Kwiatkowski his first attack. A group of 15 formed, which included all the favourites. Then the Pole launched another attack. His pursuers then disagreed. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Fenix) tried several times to encourage his companions to cooperate. But nobody really wanted to work with the strong Dutchman. So attacked Benoit Cosnefroy at the Geulhemmerberg and caught up with Kwiatkowski as a soloist. The duo then could not be caught and were allowed to decide the victory among themselves.

Liane Lippert is third in the women's category
Barely has Liana Lippert (DSM) missed out on the big coup in the women's Amstel Gold Race. The German was third after 128,5 kilometers from Maastricht to Valkenburg. Martha Cavalli (FDJ-Nouvelle Aquitaine-Futuroscope) from Italy managed a big surprise when she was able to break away on the crest of the Cauberg. Her pursuers disagreed, so that Demi Vollering (SD Worx) Four seconds later, only second place remained.
